The project was an adaptive re-use conversion of an existing gymnasium building into an undergraduate and graduate level academic facility.
Project was performed on a design-build basis. It was awarded a LEED GOLD Certification. The project added a new mezzanine in the former gym space.
Electrical lighting design includes a new centralized lighting control system with addressable, dimmable fluorescent lighting, daylighting controls and occupancy sensors. Also included are dimmable 12W LED lamps to replace 65W incandescent PAR lamps for significant energy savings compared with the ASHRAE energy code.
A lighting lab was developed, along with the University’s staff, to provide students with an understanding of lighting technologies ranging from incandescent to low-voltage, to dimmable fluorescent to wall wash fixtures to new state-of-the-art 2×2 LED fixtures.
The HVAC system included high efficiency roof-top DX units with energy recovery and indoor hydronic heating coils in VAV boxes. Energy efficiency is estimated at approximately 18% better than ASHRAE 90.1-2007.
